Catching Pokémon

There are two ways to catch Pokémon, during battle and story events. Catching a Pokémon because of a story event is all up to the GM. If the GM decides that over the corse of a game session it would make sense to give a Pokémon to a player, she can do so. This could include a player gaining  the trust of a Pokémon, or an NPC thinks the Pokémon should go with a trainer, or something similar. The trainer will receive said Pokémon. Pokémon given through story events should have better stats, because it is harder to get them.

To catch a wild Pokémon during a battle, a trainer can use her turn to try and catch the Pokémon instead of attacking. She can do this by using a Poké Ball. If the trainer can roll under a set number on a D100, she will catch the Pokémon.

Depending on the Pokémon’s HP, level, and Status Ailments, the difficulty of catching it will change.

You must roll under their Exhaustion (EX), Plus Status Ailment, minus the Pokémon’s level divided by 2, multiplied by the ball’s catch rate. (EX + SA – (Level / 2)) x Poké Ball’s catch rate.

Exhaustion
EX is calculated by determining what present the Pokémon’s HP is currently. The lower  the HP the higher the EX.

100% to 50% the EX is 20.

49% to 30% the EX is 40.

29% to 10% the EX is 50.

9% to 1% the EX is 60.

0% the EX is 70.

StatusAilment
Status Ailment number (SA) is determined by what Status Ailment the Pokémon currently has on it. Different Status Ailment give different SA’s. The SA will stack so if a Pokémon is asleep and poisoned you add 10 plus 25 to get an SA of 35.

Burn will give 10 EX.

Freeze will give 25 EX.

Poison will give 10 EX.

Badly poisoned will give 15 EX.

Sleep will give 25 EX.

Note: Once a pokemon is knocked out it will no longer have any Status Ailment so you will not receive the Status Ailment bonus when trying to catch said Pokémon.

Catching KOed Pokémon, and Other Dirty Tactics
It might seem the most obvious choice to capture KOed
Pokémon. However… this is not wise. Pokémon need to respect their trainer, if they’re to be of use, and being captured while KOed messes up the Pokéball’s design. To elaborate:

Pokéballs are extremely sophisticated not only in containing Pokémon, but also in making them submissive. While being captured, as the Pokéball sways left and right, the Pokémon struggles furiously, exhausting themself. Pokémon Behaviorologists have fine tuned this to make the Pokémon feel as if they’re struggling for supremacy, as they would against other Pokémon over a mate or territory. By doing this, they’re defeat makes them feel instinctively submissive towards the trainer, the owner of the Pokéball and the Pokémon whom weakened the captive. If the captive is KOed, they can’t struggle against the Pokéball, and thus will keep a wild, solitary, and even resentful attitude towards the trainer, rather than one of respect.

Pokémon who are captured while KOed, therefore, are almost never obedient.

Similarly, hunting Pokémon 2-on-1 will cause them to disrespect you. The reason for this, is that when Pokémon are battling for supremacy they fight 1-on-1, or 2-on-2… Unfair odds are associated with predators and enemies, so they will see you as such if you use those tactics. Of course, if you fight them 2-on-6,  3-on-4, or whichever else yet manage to catch them: They’ll respect you more than normal, for winning against superior numbers.

Oddly, using a Tag-Team system, it is shown that Pokémon still respect trainers who catch them using several Pokémon.

Basic Balls

A Poké Ball is a type of item critical in any Trainer’s quest. It is used for capturing and storing wild Pokémon; a Trainer may carry as many Poké Balls and ball variants as he or she desires. However, a Trainer may only carry up to six Pokémon at a time in their party. Therefore, if a Trainer owns more than six Pokémon, they may be stored in a Pokémon storage system, and withdrawn or deposited at any Pokémon Center. There are four different basic levels of Poké Ball, and over a dozen variations on the Poké Ball design throughout the world.

A Poké Ball’s strength is determined by how much it raises a wild Pokémon’s catch rate. Many Poké Balls’ strengths change based on certain conditions.

A Poké Ball also limits the strength of the Pokémon inside it.

Devon Corporation is a large company that is based in Rustboro City. Most of the locals just shorten the name to “Devon”. It was a small company many years ago, but has grown by leaps and bounds. Devon makes many useful products, many of them geared towards Pokémon training and is responsible for creating the new types of PokéBalls.

Apricorn Balls

Apricorn are fruit that grow on trees in groves. Each apricorn is valuable because apricorn trees are very sensitive; picking an apricorn before it is ripe, or picking too many at once could damage the entire tree. A Poké Ball smith, can make different Poké Balls out of each color apricorn. Apricorn Poké Balls are much rarer than the usual kinds, but in older times almost all Poké Balls were made out of apricorn.
